Attack of the Urban Mosquitoes Aggressive and Hard to Kill: Two Asian Cityslickers Swarm the East Coast
The latest scourge crossing the country has a taste for the big city.
The Asian tiger mosquito, named for its distinctive black-and-white striped body, is a relatively new species to the U.S. that is more vicious, harder to kill and, unlike most native mosquitoes, bites during the daytime. It also prefers large cities over rural or marshy areas—thus earning the nickname among entomologists as "the urban mosquito."
Dr. Fonseca is leading a U.S. Department of Agriculture effort to develop a cost-effective method to control the Asian tiger mosquito(Aedes albopictus) population. The university is currently focusing on using larvacides, which render larvae incapable of growing into adults."Part of the reason it is called 'tiger' is also because it is very aggressive," says Dina Fonseca, an associate professor of entomology at Rutgers University. "You can try and swat it all you want, but once it's on you, it doesn't let go. Even if it goes away, it will be back for a bite."
Since urban areas tend to be warmer—often by 5 to 10 degrees—than rural areas, cities are seeing tiger mosquitoes earlier and sticking around longer, often into October.
"The Asian tiger mosquito arrived this year in June—three months earlier than last year," says Wayne Andrews, superintendent of the Bristol County Mosquito Control Project in Taunton, Mass.
The species has been traced to 1985, when a ship arrived in Texas loaded with used truck tires, perhaps from Japan, which is a major used-tire exporter, according to research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The eggs hatched when they were exposed to water. Since then, the species has made its way from Texas to Florida and up the East Coast, says Gary G. Clark, a research leader with the Agriculture Department. "Now, more than half of the states have this aggressive species," he says.
Another species imported from Asia is the rock pool mosquito (Aedes japonicus), which also came to the U.S. through the tire trade, experts say. This species is blackish-brown, with white scales on the lower part of its thorax and legs. It was first detected on Long Island, N.Y., and in areas of New Jersey in 1997, according to Dr. Fonseca. "Even though it is not as vicious a biter as the Asian tiger mosquito, it is a big pest," she says.
These urban mosquitoes are what entomologists call "container mosquitoes." Instead of marshes and natural bodies of water, both Asian tiger and rock pool mosquitoes can breed in small, artificial containers, such as tires, toys, cans and concrete structures. "A rule of thumb for container mosquitoes is: Water plus seven days equals mosquitoes," Dr. Fonseca says.
Weather patterns can help Asian tigers readily spread beyond the Northeast. "As a result of climate change, the summer lasts longer and arrives earlier," says Andrew Comrie, a climatologist at the University of Arizona. Eggs of Asian tiger and rock pool mosquitoes are also able to "overwinter," meaning they can survive a cold, dry climate—all they need is exposure to water in warmer temperatures.
The Asian tiger was responsible for transmitting more than 200 cases of dengue fever, a sometimes-fatal viral infection, in Hawaii in 2001-02. A similar (but less lethal) virus called chikungunya was transmitted in France and Italy, but no cases have been cited in the U.S. from the Asian tiger. Likewise, the rock pool mosquito is capable of transmitting the West Nile virus, but no cases have been traced to the species in the U.S., Dr. Fonseca says.
That does little to take the sting out of their bites. Irritation and itching are the body's allergic reaction to the protein secreted from the female mosquito when it bites.
Moreover, the optimum conditions for spraying are early evening, after these mosquitoes retire. Also, Dr. Fonseca, the Rutgers entomologist, explains that spraying kills only the adult mosquitoes and not the eggs or larvae.Cities that spray for mosquitoes may find these latest breeds tough to tackle. "The usual methods of spraying cannot control the population of these species because their preferred breeding areas are difficult to reach," says Mr. Andrews, the Massachusetts mosquito-control agent.
To reduce the chances of getting bitten, remove containers that have standing water in them. The best personal protection comes from products that contain DEET. The chemical has been controversial, but "as long as you don't bathe in DEET or inhale too much of it, you should be fine," says Bruce Robinson, a clinical instructor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Since the tiger is a low-flying mosquito, keep ankles and legs covered. Also, the Asian tiger is a very visual mosquito, Dr. Fonseca says. "If you wear dark-colored clothes, you will be inviting it to bite you."

Why DJ Khaled may not be 'the best forever'
DJ Khaled was at the forefront of Miami's hip-hop scene re-exploding on a national level, spouting passionate declarations over undeniably street, yet consistently commercial hits.
His latest album, We The Best Forever, drops today to less fanfare than his previous releases but anyone who's familiar with the rap impresario knows Khaled won't let it go unnoticed.
The unequivocally engaging impresario ushered in a new era out of artists from the area climbing out of the shadow of Uncle Luke's Miami Bass success in the late 80s and early 90s and the runs of Trick Daddy Trina. They've built and maintained their success by paying homage to their Florida predecessors and tenants of their local roots, most notably the culture created after the explosion of the cocaine industry. Their music was infused not with the grittiness of the worst hoods but their decadence -- think Tony Montana.
Khaled's chart-topping affiliations with artists like Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Drake have catapulted the background player that broke tracks and acts on local radio to the status of national tastemaker, with We The Best Forever emerging has his opportunity to prove he's especially strong in the summer.
The features alone look like a who's who in the black music. From the timeless (Mary J. Blige and Busta Rhymes) to current crossover stars (B.o.B, Big Sean and Cee-Lo), his familiar supporting cast (Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, T-Pain, and Plies), his newest labelmates (Tyga, Corey Gunz and Jae Millz) and the nearly forgotten (The Game and Akon).
The problem is that what looks so good on paper never materializes. Most of what makes the aforementioned artists headlining talents is diluted into cookie-cutter caricatures of what they are actually capable of. For the most part, tracks strike you as uninspired, convenient paydays on beats they had laying around for a couple years. Failing to evoke any genuine emotion, many of the tracks come off as poorly executed, great ideas of what a song could be with the collection of talent assembled for them.
An R&B super song like "Legendary" with Chris Brown, Keyshia Cole & Ne-Yo is a perfect example. In terms of its conception, it seems like a home run. All those voices on one song could have been amazing but what it ends up being is a mess with the question arising, is Khaled solely to blame for wasting great talent on a bunch of forgettable tracks?
That answer isn't so easy.
Think about it, this isn't the same era when DJ Clue was dropping The Professional andFunkmaster Flex 60 Minutes of Funk, compilation albums with all the biggest stars on these super tracks. Banking on the success of a DJ compilation album in 2011 is about as smart as betting on a true Republican contender to emerge. Especially a decade removed from heyday for this type of project, Forever is perfect example of why projects like this don't necessarily work as traditionally packaged.
Had this been a mixtape, it probably wouldn't have been so heavy-handedly produced -- Khaled's Cash Money debut is also the first album where he was the featured producer -- and it would have most likely featured re-imaginations of current radio hits to draw you into something comfortable and familiar. Most importantly, wouldn't have cost a dime.
If this album were free, you wouldn't feel like someone was wasting anything other than your time when only one-fourth of the record having any sort of replay value.
Missing are the things that made his previous albums work. There's no smash hit like "I'm So Hood" was on We The Best or "Go Hard" with Kanye West was on We Global. Even his trademarked energy was underplayed. The creatively grandiose 'motivational speeches' fall flat without the other environmental factors that made them so great in the past.
What had been a steady stream of quality street music with a unique commercial viability now plays as tired. Safe even. For its bright spots, "Money" with Young Jeezy and Ludacris or "Welcome to My Hood (Remix)" with phenomenal verses turned in over seven minutes of the anthemic music you've come to expect, the rest is strangely dated -- point to copious amounts of auto-tune and a Plies feature -- and lacks the that spark it once had.
Declaring the end of an era would be overstating it but Khaled seemed to have caught on with Young Money/Cash Money empire during the decline of their noted success on the charts. Forever is hardly and testament to how good Khaled can be but rather a Rolodex of the people he knows, which at the end of the day, may be his enduring legacy.
I just hope his next album features the oozing emotion and engaging anthems I like to think of him for and the All-Star talents he assembles gives much more than an All-Star game effort.

Lloyd & Miguel Beef In Cleveland Over Similar Hair Styles [Audio]
The beef between singers Lloyd and Miguel over their similar hair styles spilled over into a heated exchange between the two this past weekend at Z107.9′s Summer Jam in Cleveland.
This situation initially started last week when after seeing Lloyd's new haircut Miguel tweeted, “Imitation is the Highest form of Flattery. Shout to LLoyd.”
Lloyd wasn't happy about being called a copycat. When the two saw each other at Summer Jam Miguel ended up apologizing after Lloyd told him he felt disrespected.
The entire exchange was recorded so check it out below.
Miguel burst into the dressing room singing “The Wayans Bros.” theme song “We’re brothers, we’re happy and we’re singing and we’re colored”. Lloyd wasn’t in a joking mood and asks why Miguel sent the tweet.
Lloyd: Why would you even say that though?
Miguel: Yo, it shouldn’t have been said, as honest as I may have been. If it was like me and you having a conversation and I said it to you, it would have been different. The fact that I said it on Twitter was f*cked up and I apologize for that.
Lloyd: But the fact is that I was not trying to imitate you,” he continued. “I just felt like it was disrespectful. On some real s***, it was cheap and I felt like it was distasteful. The idea behind it wasn’t to mock you or imitate you, it was just to shave my [hair] so I could get a tattoo. For you to say that and bring all that kind of energy to me… It’s album release week so why am I answering questions about Miguel when I should be talking about my album that I worked two years for.

Family Affairs ( Did Beyonce Dad Steal From His Daughter ? )
TMZ is reporting that Beyonce’s dad has filed legal papers which now explain why the singer fired him as her manager — he claims she’s under the impression he stole lots of money from her, and say it’s a bad rap.
In the documents — obtained by TMZ — Mathew Knowles claims Live Nation Entertainment wanted desperately to sink its fangs into Beyonce’s 2011 world tour. According to the docs, Mathew claims Live Nation told Beyonce that Mathew “had stolen money from Beyonce on her most recent tour or otherwise taken funds that [he] was not entitled to.”
Mathew claims Live Nation was effective, because Beyonce had her law firm conduct an audit, and the law firm concluded Mathew had indeed pilfered money from her. Beyonce then fired him.
Mathew claims after he was canned, Beyonce hired a manager who had worked as a former exec at Live Nation and maintained a relationship with the company.
Mathew insists the theft accusations by Live Nation are false, and he wants the judge to give him the right to take depositions of various people at Live Nation, to determine just how they concluded he was a thief.

J.P. Morgan Chase takes stake in Johnson Publishing (Jet/Ebony)
Can We Trust Black Mags Founded By The Same People That Oppress Minorities ?????
Ebony and Jet publisher Johnson Publishing has sold a minority stake to J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Johnson will put the funds toward its growth plan, including the development of an e-commerce business.
Ebony and Jet publisher Johnson Publishing has sold a minority stake to J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Johnson will put the funds toward its growth plan, including the development of an e-commerce business.
"J.P. Morgan Chase's investment in our firm is a logical outgrowth of our outstanding relationship. It positions Johnson Publishing for continued growth as a family-owned publisher of the Black communities most-trusted brands by providing financial resources to take our iconic Ebony and Jet magazines to the next level and accelerate our growth strategy for Fashion Fair Cosmetics," said Johnson publishing chairman Linda Johnson Rice in a statement.
Johnson Publishing has endured significant losses in magazine circulation and advertising revenue in recent years, as well as executive turnover. Last June, Anne Sempowski Ward resigned as president and COO while former White House press secretary (and Johnson consultant) Desiree Rogers was named CEO. Johnson Rice, who previously served as CEO, became chairman.
Returning Ebony and Jet to rate base has been a priority and the publisher has used direct-mail and discounted subscriptions to get Ebony back to a rate base of 1.25 million while Jet's circulation has grown to 800,000, Rogers told Chicago Business.
Under Rogers, Johnson has also boosted its sales and editorial presence in New York City. However, Ebony posted a 2.5 percent drop in ad pages while ad pages in Jet plunged 12.9 percent through July, according to FOLIO: sister publication min.
"Right now it's so busy because we're looking to upgrade both magazines plus the cosmetics line without losing the rich history that's been established," Rogers told FOLIO: earlier this year. "In no way do I want anyone to think that we're walking away from our history. We want that old excitement back. We have to remain focused on what we're trying to achieve as a unit."

Shaquille O’Neal to work for Turner Broadcasting
The hottest made-for-TV free agent to hit the open market since Charles Barkley retired in 2000 has apparently hooked up with his new team. The recently retired Shaquille O'Neal(notes),according to CNBC's Darren Rovell, will be working for Turner Broadcasting; likely sitting across the table from Sir Charles on TNT's Inside the NBA set.
Due to injuries and issues with his weight as a player, the post-Los Angeles career of the surefire Hall of Famer was more than a little disappointing, even considering his championship run with the Miami Heat in 2006. Still, the loquacious nature that served Shaq so well as he built up an endorsement empire upon entering the league in 1992 grew by the year, and though his deep and monotone delivery has been the source for satire for both middling stand-up comics and sportswriters alike, he should have sites like these filled up with all sorts of in-season video clips as he takes to the airwaves.
Then again, as our own Eric Freeman pointed out yesterday, O'Neal's potential addition to the Inside the NBA set (his hiring has yet to be confirmed by Turner, to say nothing of the eventual revelation of his role in the broadcasts) could move Chris Webber either away from the set, or into a diminished role on the program (halftime can only go on for so long). Webber has quickly established himself as a star analyst, he's easily the best on any of the national broadcasts of any ex-player, or at the very least tied with Steve Kerr and a country mile removed from the nearest competition. Less Chris Webber on the tube, even with his significant airtime on NBA TV, is not a good thing.
That said, as Matt Moore brought up on Saturday, Shaq could be working a few feet from Sir Charles, a man he once tussled with during Barkley's final season as a player (they've since made up, video after the jump):
We don't know Shaq's role yet, though, or even if the hiring is legit (although Rovell and his sources are usually to be trusted on matters like these). We can safely assume, as it was with Barkley's first season in 2000-01, that O'Neal will be a constant source for goofy. And we can always use more goofy in our lives.
Now we just have to figure out when Shaq's television debut will be. Hopefully sometime before the fall of 2012.
